Things you could do for Sump Pump Issues

Even though sump pumps are intended to stop your basement from flooding, it could also overflow which is something that you don’t want to experience. If ever this problem occurs in your home, do not immediately call the service of a professional plumber. There is definitely something that you can do first. At least you should give it a try before spending for a professional service.

The Discharge Line

The first thing that you can do is simply to tap the discharge line coming from the sump pit. Doing this could turn on the primary submersible pump.

If this does not work, you have to wait for some time until the basin is empty. Then, you could locate the cause of the problem. If you don’t see anything that caused the problem in the submersible pump, it’s best that you have it replaced.

The next thing that you can do is to check the fuse box. It could be possible that the fuse is damaged. A blown out fuse could be fixed by turning off the breaker, replacing it with a new one and turning it on again.

Try also to plug anything in the outlet that could check if it has power. There are times that the problem might be in your outlet. If there is no power, surely your sump pump will not work.

See to it not to place your hand in the basin if the pump is turned on. If there is a short circuit, you might get electrocuted.

Check for Debris

If at this time still you could not find any problem in the pump, unplug the motor. Then, reach for the pump. Feel around it and check if there is anything that is stuck near or in the submersible pump.

Gently remove any object that is dislodged in the pump. When the foreign object is gone, try to move the float switch if you could pull it up and down. After doing so, plug the pump back so that you won’t experience any flooding.

Getting the Service of the Professionals

If ever the things mentioned above did not work, that is the right time to seek the service of a professional plumber. When you do so, do not forget to check the background of the plumbing company you choose.

You need to make sure that the plumbers who will work in your sump pump are licensed and trained well to do their job. Any problem in the fixing could result to flooding in your basement.

If ever your sump pump is not having any problem yet, keep in mind that problems would certainly occur anytime due to wear and tear. This is the reason why you have to make sure that you have your pump regularly inspected by a professional plumber.
